School age classrooms at Prospect School provide intensive, structured programs for students demonstrating multiple needs.  The curriculum for school aged students includes:

  • Skill enhancement for integration into the home school district
  • Therapeutic intervention for multiply disabled students
  • Use of assistive technology and computer based instruction

The program focus for multiply disabled students emphasizes meaningful interaction with the environment through the use of technology and therapeutic intervention.  Assistive devices encourage students to be more active participants in learning and communicating.

PRIMARY TRANSITION CLASS

12:1+1:4 (ages 5-8)

This program includes up to 12 students, one special education teacher and four full time classroom staff.  The classroom includes first year and primary school-aged students who demonstrate significantly decreased functional skills.  The main focus of the classroom is to enhance social, academic, and communication skills necessary to function within a less restrictive environment, incorporating the students’ home district curriculum when appropriate.  Students demonstrate similar needs in the areas of attention to task, pre-academics and early academics, and social development requiring assistance and presets for daily transitions.  Close supervision is provided to address behavioral and learning needs based on students’ age and disability.

PRIMARY MULTIPLY DISABLED

12:1+1:4 (ages 5-11)

Students display significant physical and instructional needs based on their diagnosis and sensory impairments.  Students demonstrate developmental delays in all areas of functioning.  Students require a high degree of individualized attention in order to meet their intensive instructional, physical, health care, and management needs.  The program focus is on increasing environmental awareness and interaction, developing basic communication skills through the use of assistive technology and incorporating sensory motor experiences to encourage development.  Activities include the use of a variety of adaptive and assistive devices.

SECONDARY MULTIPLY DISABLED

12:1+1:4 (ages 12-21)

Classrooms include students with moderate to severe developmental delays in all areas.  Students function between 12 and 18 months with some scatter.  The program is designed to encourage functional interaction with the environment, establish basic methods of communication and increase concept development through the use of assistive technology and sensory stimulation materials.  Students require a high degree of individualized attention in order to encourage functional skill development.  Center-based stations are used to increase sensory awareness based on developmental levels.  In addition, students may be limited in overall independent mobility and exploration of their environment due to sensory and cognitive impairment.
